Hijackers slammed a passenger plane into the Pentagon September 11, 2001 and may have killed as many as 800 people in an attack that destroyed part of the U.S. military headquarters but interrupted operations only briefly. Despite the damage, officials said the massive building on the Potomac River would reopen Wednesday. Firefighters work on the roof of the Pentagon after the attack and officials said it could take a full day to bring the fire under control. (Kevin Lamarque/Reuters)
